The Sam Morris Invitational was created by Force Jiu-Jitsu to honor Sam Morris and carry his impact forward through the sport and community he was part of.

This archive preserves the inaugural event exactly as it deserves to be remembered: athletes taking risks, coaches and families filling the room, local businesses standing behind a shared purpose, and a worldwide audience invited to watch for free. Every match, scholarship, and future qualifier keeps Sam's name connected to opportunity.

THE DAY THE
VISION BECAME REAL.

Doors opened at 11:30 AM at Force Jiu-Jitsu, 334 S Peterson Ave in Douglas. At noon, the first match began in a single-elimination absolute bracket built to reward decisive grappling.

Athletes competed under six-minute regulation rounds, EBI overtime when needed, and a ten-minute final. Admission was $20 in the building; the online broadcast was free so Sam's legacy could reach far beyond the room.

He left Douglas with the custom Sam Morris Invitational championship belt and the $1,600 winner's prize—an emphatic first name in the event's history.

The Rules

Regulation

Six-minute matches. The championship final runs ten minutes.

Overtime

Up to three EBI overtime rounds from back mount or spiderweb.

Submissions

All submissions are legal. The format rewards athletes who pursue the finish.

Safety

No slams, spiking, scissor-leg takedowns, fish hooking, or throwing into submissions.

Boundaries

Out-of-bounds action resets to neutral. Intentional misconduct is not tolerated.

06

Authority

The referee controls resets and safety. The referee's decision is final.
